Organic chemistry rewards pattern recognition far more than memorization. Here is what to learn first.
Students often approach DAT organic chemistry by trying to memorize every reaction they encountered in two semesters. That is both enormous and inefficient, because the test rewards recognizing why reactions happen more than recalling that they do.
Before any specific reaction, these need to be solid:
Students solid on these can often work out unfamiliar reactions. Students who skipped them are stuck memorizing indefinitely.
SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 appear constantly, and questions frequently hinge on predicting which one occurs under given conditions. Know for each: what substrate favors it, what the nucleophile or base strength implies, what the solvent suggests, and what happens to stereochemistry. SN2 proceeding with inversion and SN1 proceeding through a planar carbocation is the kind of distinction that gets tested directly.
Rather than a list of individual reactions, learn these families and what characterizes them:
IR and NMR questions appear and are often easy points for students who prepared and guesses for those who did not. Know the characteristic IR regions, particularly the broad hydroxyl stretch and the sharp carbonyl peak, and basic NMR interpretation including chemical shift ranges, splitting, and integration.
Work problems rather than rereading notes. When you get one wrong, identify whether you did not know the reaction or did not recognize which category it belonged to. Those are different problems with different fixes, and the second one is more common and more fixable.
