There is real value on both platforms, and there are people working both of them specifically because dental equipment carries a high price tag. Here is how to tell the difference.
Dental equipment is an attractive target for fraud for one reason: the dollar amounts are large enough to be worth someone's effort. A scammer who clears one fake chair sale has made more than they would on twenty fake phone listings. That does not mean you should avoid these platforms. It means you should approach them with a process.
Before any of the vetting advice below, understand this, because it is the single thing that determines whether a bad outcome is a recoverable problem or a total loss.
PayPal has two payment types and they are not interchangeable.
Goods and Services is the commercial payment path. Eligible purchases made this way fall under PayPal's Buyer Protection program. If the equipment never shows up, or shows up in materially worse shape than the listing claimed, you can file a dispute and there is an actual process for getting your money returned.
Friends and Family is for personal transfers between people who already know each other. These payments carry no protection for either side. Send money this way and the seller vanishes, ships the wrong unit, or ships nothing at all, and PayPal has no dispute process available to you. The recourse does not exist because the payment was never categorized as a purchase in the first place.
The fee difference is why sellers ask. Goods and Services costs the seller a percentage plus a fixed fee, while Friends and Family funded from a bank account or PayPal balance is typically free. A seller asking you to send Friends and Family is asking you to absorb their processing fee by giving up every protection you have.
The rule, with no exceptions: if you are buying something, pay Goods and Services. A legitimate seller who wants to avoid the fee can build it into the price. A seller who insists specifically on Friends and Family, gift card, wire transfer, Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or cryptocurrency is asking for a payment method with no reversal path. Fraudulent sellers push for this payment type specifically because of what it strips away from you.
One more thing worth knowing: using Friends and Family for a commercial transaction also violates PayPal's terms of service, so even if you wanted to argue your way to a refund afterward, you would be arguing from a position where both parties broke the rules.
Buyer protection also has limits worth understanding: it generally covers items not received and items significantly not as described, but coverage rules and exclusions change, so check PayPal's current Purchase Protection terms before relying on it for a large purchase. It is a strong safety net, not a guarantee.
eBay is generally the safer of the two platforms because the feedback system creates a reputation cost for bad behavior. That system only helps you if you actually read it.
Keep the transaction on eBay. A seller who asks you to complete the sale off-platform to "save fees" is asking you to give up eBay's Money Back Guarantee along with the fee. That request alone is enough reason to walk.
Marketplace has better deals more often, because you are frequently buying directly from a practice that is closing or upgrading rather than from a reseller. It also has almost no built-in protection, so verification is entirely on you.
Ask these directly. The answers matter less than whether the person can answer at all.
A real seller finds most of these easy. Someone who deflects, gives contradictory answers, or refuses an inspection is telling you something.
This is the core advantage of buying locally. Go see it. Cycle the chair, run the delivery unit, check the base for rust, look at upholstery seams. Our pre-purchase equipment checklist covers what to actually look at, and the chair pricing guide covers what it should cost.
If distance makes an in-person visit impossible, pay a local dental equipment technician to inspect it. On a several-thousand-dollar purchase, an inspection fee is cheap insurance.
Any one of these justifies slowing down. Two or more together, walk away.
None of this takes long once it is habit, and it is the difference between a good deal and an expensive story.
Payment platform policies, fees, and protection terms change. Verify current PayPal Purchase Protection coverage and eBay Money Back Guarantee terms directly with those companies before relying on them for a significant purchase. This article is general guidance and not legal or financial advice.
