The compressor is invisible until it fails, at which point the entire practice stops. Here is what to understand before you buy one used.
Compressors get less attention than chairs because nobody sees them. They are also one of the components where getting it wrong shuts down every operatory simultaneously, which makes them worth understanding properly.
Dental compressors should be oil-free. Oil-lubricated compressors can introduce oil vapor into the air line, which is unacceptable for air that reaches a patient's mouth and can contaminate handpieces and bonding surfaces. A cheap general-purpose shop compressor is not a substitute, regardless of what the price comparison looks like. If a used listing does not specify oil-free, ask directly and verify the model.
Moisture in the air line causes corrosion, damages handpieces, and interferes with bonding procedures. Dental compressors include drying systems for this reason. When evaluating a used unit, the state of the dryer matters as much as the pump. Ask when desiccant was last changed or whether the membrane dryer has been serviced.
Compressors are generally sized by how many simultaneous users they can support. The mistake in both directions:
Size for your realistic simultaneous usage with some headroom for growth, not for your maximum theoretical operatory count. If you are planning to expand, it is usually cheaper to size for the expansion than to replace the unit later, but only if the expansion is actually likely.
Compressors are loud and generate heat. They need a mechanical space with ventilation and reasonable access for service. Retrofitting a location for a compressor after the fact is more disruptive than planning for it, so factor placement into your buildout rather than treating it as a detail.
A well-maintained compressor lasts a long time. A neglected one fails early and takes your schedule with it. Whatever unit you buy, establish the maintenance interval immediately: draining, filter changes, and dryer service. This is cheap and it is the difference between a long service life and an emergency.
