Midmark's M9/M11 manual explains the mechanism plainly: minerals dissolved in feed water form deposits at sterilizer temperatures that can stop valves from opening or closing and can lead to corrosion in the chamber and tubing. Tuttnauer's tabletop manual adds that tap water impurities increase cleaning needs and can block the small air jet orifice. SciCan's STATIM goes further and electronically checks water quality, refusing to start a cycle when the reservoir water is out of spec.
TDS and conductivity
Total dissolved solids (TDS) is the concentration of dissolved minerals and salts, usually expressed in parts per million (ppm). Most handheld TDS meters actually measure electrical conductivity (µS/cm) and convert it to an estimated ppm. For rough orientation, the EPA's secondary (non-enforceable, aesthetic) drinking water guideline for TDS is 500 mg/L, and US tap water commonly measures somewhere between a few dozen and several hundred ppm depending on the source. A countertop distiller rated around 0.8 gallon per batch would need three batches a day, which is awkward if batches take hours and someone has to be there to start them. This office would look at an auto-fill distiller or a small RO/DI unit with a storage tank. Your real numbers will differ; use the reservoir sizes and refill intervals in your own IFUs.

Start of day
- Check that the storage bottle or tank has enough water for the day's first cycles.
- Glance at any in-line TDS display or spot-check with a handheld meter weekly or when something seems off.
- Fill sterilizer reservoirs from a clean, covered container. Do not use a container that previously held anything else.
During the day
- Start a distiller batch early so water is ready by the afternoon.
- Keep collection containers closed; purified water absorbs contaminants and is not sterile.
- Label containers with the date filled and use older water first.
End of day
- Rinse the distiller's boiling chamber if the IFU calls for it after each cycle (Pure Water's Mini-Classic instructions do).

Cleaning scale and changing filters
Distillers leave behind everything the water contained. That scale builds in the boiling chamber and slows heating. Clean it with the manufacturer's recommended descaler on its schedule; Pure Water, for example, calls for cleaning the Mini-Classic boiling tank once a month and replacing its carbon post-filter about every three to four months. Hard water shortens those intervals.
RO systems do not scale the same way, but pre-filters clog, the membrane fouls, and DI resin exhausts. Solmetex's Sterisil System G4 documentation gives a sense of typical intervals: pre-filter stages roughly yearly, the DI stage every 4 to 12 months depending on feed water, and a UV lamp yearly, with automated alerts when replacement is due. Storage tanks should be sanitized on the manufacturer's schedule.
Tip: test your tap water TDS once and write it on the system. If your feed water is 400 ppm, expect DI cartridges and distiller descaling to come due much sooner than the brochure suggests.

Safety and compliance
- Follow the sterilizer IFU. CDC's dental guidance on sterilization and disinfection stresses keeping manufacturer instructions available and following them. Water specs are part of those instructions.
- Purified is not sterile. Distilled or RO water is not sterile, and it does not replace dental unit waterline treatment. CDC calls for dental unit water used in nonsurgical care to meet drinking water standards and for sterile solutions in surgical procedures. See our waterline guide.
- Heat and electrical. Distillers run hot and draw substantial current; one popular countertop model is rated at 800 watts. Give them a dedicated outlet and clearance, and keep cords away from water.
- Plumbing. Plumbed distillers and RO systems need proper backflow prevention and an air gap on drain lines under most plumbing codes. That is plumber work; codes vary locally.
- Chemicals. Descalers are typically acidic. Keep safety data sheets in your hazard communication program and wear gloves and eye protection.
- Records. A simple log of TDS readings, filter changes, and descaling supports warranty claims and inspections.
Buying new vs. used
Distillers are durable and simple, so a clean used unit can be a fine buy. RO systems are mostly consumables around a housing, so a used unit is only worth it if you replace all filters, the membrane, and the DI stage and the housings are sound.

Softeners swap minerals for sodium; they do not remove dissolved solids.
