Almost every question we get about used dental equipment is really the same question: is this price reasonable? A dentist finds a chair on Facebook Marketplace for $1,800 and cannot tell whether that is a steal or a trap. A retiring owner is told his four operatories are worth $40,000 and has no way to check. A startup is quoting a refurbished sterilizer at $4,200 and wants to know whether a private seller would take half of that.
This page exists to give you a reference point. It lists the price ranges we see across roughly 68 categories of dental equipment, used and new, side by side, with a note on what actually pushes an individual unit toward the top or the bottom of its range. These are observed ranges for typical condition in the US used market as of 2026. They are not appraisals, quotes, or valuations of your specific equipment.
Search by equipment name or filter by category. The "typical used range" is what a functional unit in ordinary condition tends to trade for. The "typical new range" is roughly what the current equivalent costs new before dealer discounting, so you can see the spread.

We want to be straightforward about where these numbers come from, because a price guide that hides its method is not worth much.
Observed asking prices. The largest input is what equipment is actually listed for right now. That means refurbished inventory on specialty dealer sites, used listings from equipment resellers and liquidators, dealer catalogs that carry both new and recertified stock, classified listings on dental-specific boards, auction results, and general marketplace listings on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. For this page we looked at current listings across multiple dealers in 2026 and recorded both the item description and the price as shown.
Completed sales where we can see them. Asking prices alone are misleading. Where completed listings and auction results are visible, we weight those more heavily, because they reflect what someone was willing to pay rather than what someone hoped to get.
Our own liquidation and resale work. ChairsideSource grew out of hands-on equipment liquidation: buying out closing and retiring practices, pulling equipment, and reselling it. That work produces numbers you cannot get from listings, particularly on the low end. A full four-operatory buyout does not price like four separate listings, and the difference is instructive. Published price references for the new column. New ranges come from manufacturer and dealer list pricing where it is public, and from industry price references where it is not. New prices are also negotiated, bundled, and discounted constantly, so treat the new column as a ceiling rather than a quote.
This is the single most important thing to understand about any equipment price data, including ours.
Sellers set asking prices with room to negotiate. Listings that are priced correctly sell quickly and disappear, while overpriced listings sit for months, which means that at any given moment the visible inventory is biased toward equipment that has not sold. If you scroll a dealer site and average what you see, you are averaging the stuff nobody bought.
On private-party sales the gap is usually meaningful. On dealer refurbished inventory the gap is smaller, because dealers price closer to what they expect to get and have added real cost in labor and warranty. Where we had both asking and completed data, we pulled the range toward the completed numbers. Where we only had asking prices, we widened the range downward rather than publishing a number we could not support.
The practical rule: if you are buying, expect the real number to sit below the middle of these ranges on private sales and near the middle on dealer refurbished units. If you are selling privately, expect to land in the lower half.
Two units with the same model name can be worth three times different amounts. Here is what accounts for that, roughly in order of impact.
This is the biggest single factor and the one buyers underweight. A chair from a brand with a national service network and a parts catalog you can order from holds value. A chair from a brand that exited the US market holds almost none, no matter how nice it looks, because the first failure ends its useful life. Before you value anything, find out whether a technician in your area will work on it.
Any equipment that depends on proprietary software has a second, invisible price attached. Imaging equipment, scanners, and CAD/CAM systems are the obvious cases. The questions are whether the license transfers to a second owner, what the manufacturer charges to transfer it, whether it transfers to a new address, and whether the version you are buying still runs on supported hardware. A sensor that current software will not recognize is worth scrap value.
Most dental equipment has a short list of consumable parts that account for most of its maintenance cost: upholstery and hydraulics on chairs, tubing and control blocks on delivery units, gaskets and elements on sterilizers, turbines on handpieces, batteries on anything cordless, plates on PSP systems. A unit with documented recent service on those items is genuinely worth more, often by more than the service cost. A unit with no records should be priced as though all of them are due.
A retiring dentist who needs the building empty by the end of the month prices differently than a dealer with a warehouse. Practice closures, relocations, insurance salvage, and estate sales all produce below-market pricing, because the seller is buying speed. Heavy equipment does not travel economically. A chair is worth more where there are buyers within driving distance and less where the nearest buyer is a thousand miles and a freight quote away. Dense metro areas with several dental schools, active dealers, and a lot of practice turnover support higher used prices. This is also why a listing three states away at a lower price frequently is not actually cheaper.
Matched operatory packages sell for more than the sum of their parts, because buyers want equipment that was designed to work together and that a technician can install in one visit. Conversely, a single orphan component from a discontinued line is worth very little.
Some equipment is worth buying used and worth something when you sell it. The common thread is simple mechanics, long service lives, and no software.
Other equipment loses most of its value fast, and understanding why will save you both as a buyer and as a seller.
This is the clearest case. Intraoral scanners, CAD/CAM systems, and some imaging equipment depend on licenses the manufacturer controls. If the manufacturer will not transfer the license, charges a large fee to do so, or requires an ongoing subscription, the secondhand hardware is worth a fraction of what it cost. A scanner that sold for $30,000 four years ago can trade for a few thousand dollars now, not because the optics degraded but because the license did not follow it. When a manufacturer stops supporting a line, the used value goes to near zero on a schedule, not a cliff. First the specialty parts disappear, then the common ones, then the technicians stop taking the calls. Equipment from brands that left the US market entirely is the extreme case: functioning units that nobody will buy at any price, because the first failure is terminal.
Cordless prophy handpieces, portable lights, curing lights, some diode lasers. When the manufacturer stops selling the battery pack, the unit is done.
Amalgam separators are the example. A used separator saves a few hundred dollars and costs you the ability to show a clean compliance record, which is why most buyers just buy new. Similar logic applies to anything an inspector will ask about.
Curing lights, amalgamators, intraoral cameras, ultrasonic cleaners. These are cheap enough new that the used discount is not worth the risk to most buyers, which is why they sell for so little in liquidation. Every number in the table is the price of the item alone. Here is what gets added on the way to a working operatory.
Someone has to disconnect the equipment, cap the lines, and get it out of the building without damaging it or the property. On chairs and cabinetry this is a half day of technician time per operatory at minimum. Dental equipment ships as freight, not parcel, and it ships badly. A chair needs a pallet and proper crating. Carrier liability on used equipment is typically limited by weight, not value, so the default coverage on a $6,000 chair may be a few hundred dollars. This is the cost that most often breaks a budget. Utilities have to come to the right place in the right sizes. Older buildings need work. Imaging equipment may need wall reinforcement, dedicated circuits, or shielding review. Budget installation as its own line, not as a percentage.
Assume you will replace the consumables on anything you buy used: tubing and o-rings on a delivery unit, gaskets on a sterilizer, turbines on handpieces, batteries on anything cordless, plates on a PSP scanner, pads and batteries on an AED. On cheaper items this can equal the purchase price.
X-ray equipment has to be registered and, in most states, inspected after installation. Nitrous systems need certification. Implant motors and furnaces need calibration. Lasers may need manufacturer recertification before the warranty or training transfers. See x-ray registration and inspections.
Covered above, but worth repeating as a budget line. Ask for the transfer fee in writing from the manufacturer, not from the seller, before you agree on a price.
Made-up numbers, but the structure is real. Suppose you find a used panoramic unit listed at $9,000. Add professional deinstallation at $1,800, freight and crating at $1,400, installation and calibration at $3,500, a state registration and inspection at $400, and a software license transfer quoted by the manufacturer at $2,500. The installed cost is $18,600, not $9,000. If a dealer will sell you a refurbished unit of the same model, installed, calibrated, licensed and warranted for $21,000, the gap is $2,400 and not $12,000. Run this arithmetic before you decide the used unit is cheaper. Your real numbers will differ.
